The race for Texas House Speaker was declared over this week by Rep. Dennis Bonnen, who provided a list of 109 pledges to his candidacy. He only needed 76 votes of House members to get the job, but Republicans and Democrats came together in a unique way to put him on track for election as the chamber's presiding officer in January.
Lawmakers started filing bills for debate when the Legislature convenes, there was more drama in the race between Rep. Will Hurd and Gina Ortiz Jones, and there was an outbreak of decency following a really distasteful joke about Dan Crenshaw, a wounded war veteran set to represent part of the Houston area in Congress.
